Clive Owen has confessed the worst part of being an actor is being taken away from his family for months at a time to film on location.

The British actor stars in The Boys Are Back, which was filmed in south Australia, and Clive found it hard being away from his family.

He said: “It is the hardest thing and it something that doesn’t get any easier, it gets harder because the kids are more conscious of time, they understand, they love routine and they love to know where they’re at.”He added: “If dad comes home and gives them their bath and that’s all they see of them, they’re okay with that … but there’s this overriding feeling that I could disappear, and that’s difficult.

“It was lovely when my family came to visit the set. I hadn’t seen them in five weeks and they came over the little hill in their Liverpool tops, because they thought it would cheer me up!”

The Closer star admitted it was different playing a father and being on set with the two young actors who played his sons – Nicholas McAnulty and George MacKay.

He said: “There was more sport generally! And it’s no accident that my two girls are Liverpool fans by the way, that’s just natural for them.

“There is a difference – there’s a fundamental difference, I know from friends who have girls and friends who have boys. I’ve got girls and it is a very different thing.”

:: The Boys Are Back is released on January 22.
