JASON Statham and Clive Owen start filming their big budget flick, The Killer Elite, in Melbourne today, but is an even bigger Hollywood name set to join them?
Swoonworthy Owen and hardman Statham were yesterday seen out for lunch at trendy St Kilda restaurant Riva, with the action adventure movie’s producer Steve Chasmam.
Hot local names Yvonne Strahovski of I Love You Too and Cleo Bachelor of the Year and Underbelly star Firass Dirani were this week revealed as part of the star- studded cast, alongside Prison Break’s Dominic Purcell.
But one of the most interesting potential cast members is yet to be confirmed.Word in film circles has it that screen legend Robert De Niro has been approached and is believed to be considering taking a key role in the big-budget thriller.
While nothing has been announced it is believed the Oscar winning actor has signed on to the action blockbuster and is expected to arrive in Melbourne this month.
If the rumours are true De Niro will no doubt call in to Crown casino’s Nobu restaurant, which he part-owns with chef and creator of Nobu chain, Nobu Matushisa.
The star was last in Melbourne in 2007 for the exclusive opening of the Japanese eatery — attended by A-list Aussie heavyweights including Lachlan and Sarah Murdoch and James and Erica Packer.
Work on The Killer Elite has already started in Britain and Chasman said he plans to shoot at locations around Melbourne and in regional Victoria.
He believes Melbourne’s architecture and laneway streets are the perfect backdrop for the flick’s international storyline.
Have you seen any Hollywood stars in Melbourne?
